The Greatness of Gary Contributor Guidelines

Telling the true story of Gary—one voice, one block, one breakthrough at a time. We welcome submissions based on the following contributor guidelines.

1. Purpose

We’re building a storytelling platform that celebrates Gary, Indiana—its history, creativity, and resilience. Every article, image, and feature should reveal the greatness that has always lived here and inspire readers to see Gary and its people with renewed pride.

2. Voice & Tone

• Authentic, not performative. Write as someone who knows Gary, not about it from afar.

• Respectful and rooted. Honor the lives and legacies you describe—accuracy and dignity matter.

• Inspirational, not sentimental. Share stories of perseverance and brilliance without romanticizing hardship.

• Conversational and clear. Use plain language with emotional depth and visual detail.

3. Story Types

All GoGary stories should align with one or more of our three editorial pillars:

• People – Stories that celebrate individuals from Gary who have made an impact—past, present, or emerging. These are personal narratives of excellence, perseverance, and pride.

• Places – Features that explore the landmarks, neighborhoods, and spaces that shape Gary’s identity, from historic roots to future potential.

• Possibilities – Articles that highlight progress, innovation, and vision—showing how Gary’s people and ideas are shaping what comes next.

Together, these pillars reveal the full story of Gary, Indiana—its brilliance, resilience, and ongoing rise.

4. Writing Guidelines

• Length: 600–1,000 words for feature articles; 300–500 words for short profiles or reflections.

• Structure: Strong lead, clear subheads, smooth transitions, and a closing that ties back to the theme of greatness or resilience.

• Sourcing: Verify all facts. Cite credible sources, and provide links or references for historical details.

• Quotes: Use direct quotes from interviews or public sources when possible. Attribute clearly.

• Formatting: Submit in Google Docs or Word, using plain text formatting (no styling).

5. Image & Media Requirements

• Submit original, high-resolution photos (JPEG or PNG, 300 dpi).

• Include captions and photographer credits.

• Do not use AI-generated or stock imagery without permission.

• Provide consent for any identifiable subjects in images.

6. Ethics & Representation

• Fact before flair. Accuracy is sacred.

• Consent matters. Ensure all interviews and photos are obtained with permission.

• Representation counts. Highlight diversity across neighborhoods, generations, and perspectives.

• Avoid stereotypes. Show Gary’s complexity—its pride, pain, humor, and hope.

7. Submission Process

1. Pitch: Complete our Contributor Application form.

2. Approval: We’ll confirm fit and offer editorial direction if accepted.

3. Submission: Provide your draft, photos, and short bio (50–75 words).

4. Editing: Our editorial team may revise for clarity, tone, or accuracy before publication.

8. Rights & Payment

• Contributors retain copyright to their work but grant GoGary the right to publish and promote it across digital and print platforms.

• Payment (if applicable) will be discussed upon acceptance.

9. Contributor Bio

Please include:

• Your full name

• A 1–2 sentence bio (city of origin or connection to Gary preferred)

• Links to your website or social profiles (optional)
