I n a city built on resilience and brilliance, a new story is taking shape. This is the Greatness of Gary—a powerful collaboration between GAPS and nationally acclaimed artist PeQue.
Born and raised in Gary, Indiana, PeQue returned home to help the next generation see their city—and themselves—through the lens of creativity and beauty.
Inside this classroom at Gary Middle School, students took on the challenge of designing portraits that honor the people who shaped the city’s past and present. With digital tools, imagination, and heart, they created pieces that will soon live beyond these walls.
This isn’t just an art project—it’s a bold step toward reimagining and beautifying their community. Each piece adds color, meaning, and pride to the streets of Gary, turning everyday spaces into sources of public inspiration.
For these students, it’s more than art—it’s their way of giving back.
Today, as their work is unveiled for all of Gary to see, we honor not just the art but the artists—because the greatness of Gary lives in them.
Presented by Gary Alumni Pathways to Students (GAPS), in partnership with the Gary Community School Corporation. Funded by the Legacy Foundation and the John S. and James L. Knight Donor-Advised Fund.
