Ron Kittle: The Steelworker Who Hit It Out of the Park

Creating an own business today is much easier than you may suppose.

R

onald Dale Kittle was born on January 5, 1958, in Gary, Indiana — a hard-working steel-town childhood that would shape his mindset. Ron Kittle, Inc.+1 He was the fourth of six children to Dorothy Jean and James W. “Slim” Kittle. Ron Kittle, Inc. After graduating from Gary Wirt High School, he labored in the steel mills of northwest Indiana. Ron Kittle, Inc.+2Retro Seasons+2 That grind forged his strength and resolve — hallmarks of the slugger he would become.

Kittle didn’t follow a classic prospect pipeline. He largely flew under the radar, but his raw power caught attention in the minors and eventually earned him a shot in the big leagues.

Rise to Stardom & Rookie of the Year (1983)

Kittle made his Major League debut on September 2, 1982. Yet, it was in 1983 that he stamped his name on the record books. With the Chicago White Sox, he mashed 35 home runs, knocked in 100 RBIs, and led all American League rookies — winning AL Rookie of the Year. That 35-homer effort also set a White Sox rookie HR record, breaking a longstanding mark

Notably, Kittle led the league in strikeouts that same year — 150 — becoming the first player ever to lead in strikeouts while winning Rookie of the Year. His slash line that year roughly reflects his all-or-nothing approach: power heavy, contact light.

Yet, what many remember are the “skyline” homers — seven balls that cleared the left field roof of Old Comiskey Park.

The Peaks & the Struggles

Over his 10-year Major League career, Kittle played for four different teams — but his heart always belonged with the White Sox. His career slash: .239 batting average, 176 home runs, 460 RBIs

His power was unquestioned; his swing was often criticized for being free-swinging. But he backed it up with highlight-reel blasts. Injuries and inconsistency, however, haunted him. Shoulder injuries, herniated discs, and a neck issue in his Yankees stint all chipped away at his productivity

His journeyman phases included stints with the New York Yankees (1986–87), Cleveland Indians (1988), and Baltimore Orioles (1990). But he’d return to Chicago multiple times — always circling back home.

After the Uniform: Ambassador, Craftsman & Manager

When his playing days ended, Kittle didn’t fade from the spotlight. Rather, he leaned into community, charity, and the White Sox legacy.

He founded Indiana Sports Charities in 1989 to fund childhood cancer research. He later became an Ambassador for the White Sox (officially from 2003 onward) — making appearances, meeting fans, and embodying franchise goodwill.

In the independent leagues, he also tested his managerial chops. He managed the Schaumburg Flyers (Northern League) for several seasons. In 1995, while managing the Merrillville Muddogs, he even pitched in a game — a quirky footnote to his multi-faceted post‐playing life.

On the creative side, Kittle produces handcrafted items and signature collectibles through his personal site

Legacy & GoGary Connection

Ron “Kitty” Kittle embodies a bridge between grit and stardom. His origin in Gary — a city shaped by steel, grit, and perseverance — mirrors the mentality he carried onto the diamond. He showed that a kid from a tough town can build his own path in professional sports, leaving a mark not just in stats, but in memories.

He remains a beloved figure among White Sox faithful — part legend, part storyteller, part goodwill ambassador. His energy, sense of fun, and willingness to connect with fans keeps him relevant decades after his final at-bat.
